The Idaho National Guard flew to Skyview High School on Monday to give students hands-on emergency medical technician (EMT) training.
"The flight medic unit has come out and decided that it's a good opportunity for our EMT students to be exposed to what the flight medivac platform offers. We have pilots here, we have crew chiefs and medics here." Colin Sesek, EMT instructor from the Nampa School District said.
The training is done in conjunction with the Idaho National Guard & the Nampa School Districts' career technical education program.
Students got to learn a number of things including how equipment is used during a medivac mission, such as ventilator use. As well as loading and unloading patients.
Sesek who is also a current Idaho National Guard member says it's all part of an effort to give students a real-world experience. He says some of his students plan to pursue the military upon graduation.
"In the medical world, you have lots of opportunities to do different things and to go different places. My job as a teacher is to show them what's out there."
Skyview High School student Abby Pastamcgee says this is helping her prepare for a career in the medical field.
"Learning all the different modalities of all the different medical pathways is really intriguing to me. It's just one more thing that helps you learn how people are kept safe, and how people are helped when they're in need," Pastamcgee said.
She believes, there's nothing like hands-on experience to make her feel more confident.
"Overall if I see a crash or someone who gets hurt, obviously I'm not the most professional person, but I feel some sort of preparedness and know what to do if something does go wrong," she said. "
"It makes me feel more confident to help anyone I see who needs help."
Sesek says students can go through three years of high school medical training. Once they graduate, they can take a certification test to be EMT certified.
